Mt. Success
The Longest Day is a fundraising event for the Alzheimer’s Association. Usually our team (Lichen Hiken) hikes one of the New Hampshire four thousand footers but do to Corona Virus this year groups were asked to limit their size and encouraged to find hikes outside of the popular White Mountains. So this year we decided to Hike Mt. Success (3,564′) in Berlin NH.
Hazy, hot and humid with a chance of thunderstorms. That was the weather forecast for this hike. We got to the trail head about 8am.
Date: | 6-20-2020 |
Location: | Berlin, NH |
Distance: | 6.0 mi |
Elevation Gain: | 1931′ |
Total Time: | 6h 45min |
Parking: | Road Side 8+ cars |
Difficultly Rating: | Moderate |
The trail is located 5.4 miles down a bumpy and dusty dirt road. Parking is roadside with room for 6-8 cars. We were on the trail by 8:30.
The first mile starts as a road walk and gradually starts up hill. Then we started to gain elevation quickly. The trail is in good condition and good footing going up and we made our way to the outlook.
Views from this outlook were spectacular! We also got a great view of our destination, Mt. Success. After a break for snacks and photos we continued on along the Success Trail.
After the outlook the trail levels out and goes through a bog. I can imagine that this would be very wet and somewhat underwater under normal conditions but we have not had any rain in a while so it was not too bad. Bog bridges all along this section to help navigate any mud we came across. At one point along the bog we came across a tree with a bunch of junk (I mean artifacts) on a tree.
After the bog we continued up the trail and through a small granite pitch that required some maneuvering. From here we started the final accent to the summit.
Once we got got to the summit we were rewarded with 360 degree views of our surroundings. We enjoyed the views took some pictures and had lunch. From here two members of our group continued to a plane crash site while the rest of us made our way back down the mountain.
I really liked this trail and this hike. The trail was interesting and even had a junk… I mean artifact tree along the bog section. The views on this hike are top notch. I’ll be back again on a cooler day to visit the plane crash.
