A walk up Whiteface Mountain in Gilford, NH
It was pitch black out and temps where in the mid twenties when I woke up at 5am. It is the day after Christmas and I need to go for a hike and work off all the bread and sweets from the previous day.
I was meeting my cousin in Concord at 7am for a quick hike up Whiteface Mountain in the Belknap Mountains.
When we got to the parking area there was only one other car there. The weather was patly sunny with low winds but it was still a bit chilly so the winter hat that covers my ears came out.

We started up the trail. We made it about 300 yards before snow pack and ice started to appear on the trail so we decided to put out micro-spikes.
The trail was wide and well packed. When we got to the junction we kept right and stepped over the stone wall to Mt. Whiteface.
This trail has a logging round that joins with it and it is easy to get off tract. We continued on to Whiteface. The first false summit has some great views of Piper and some of the other Belknaps.
We continued on for another 100 yards and reached the true summit. We took. Break, had a snack and enjoyed the views. We could see some weather coming in so we decided to make our way back down.
We had considered going over to Piper mt. But things looked a little icy up there so we will hit that another day.
On the way down we got sidetracked by the logging road and it took us way off trail. We looked at the GPS and decided to bush wack back to the trail.
Once we found the trail we made it down to the vehicles in no time. Fun hike but wish there was a bit more snow to cover all the mud.
