On our way home from Green Woodlands, we drove by the Dalton Covered Bridge in Warner, NH. So of course I had to stop and check it out.

It was a cold windy day so we did not stay long. One thing worth noting is a covered bridge stencil in each of the corners of the bridge. I wonder why they are there. I’ve never noticed anything that in other bridges.

The Dalton Covered Bridge is also called the Dalton Bridge. It was built in 1853 and had repairs done to it in 1871. And in 1990 the state of NH made some major repairs and added a metal roof.

This bridge is interesting because it is the only covered bridge to be named after a women. In a town meeting, it was voted on to “Build a good bridge near the Widow Dalton’s House”. Judith Sawyer Dalton was the widow of Issac Dalton.

This bridge is also interesting because it is hard to identify the truss type. It is classified as a “unique Truss design” but, other sources have their own ideas. the Warner Historical society lists it as a a Haupt-Type truss. The NH DOT lists it as a Kingpost Truss with an auxiliary queenpost system. And the National Register of Historic Places lists it as a Long Truss with an auxiliary queenpost system.
